The duties of the County Surveyor are described in Indiana Code 36-2-12. Some of these duties include:
Manages the construction, reconstruction and maintenance of all county-regulated drains for the county drainage board.
Maintains legal survey record books and other survey plats and data.
Perpetuates and maintains Section Corners, Militia Donation Corners, Location Corners, Survey Corners as well as Luke Decker Claim corners as originally established within the county.
Issue applicable permits
Verify business locations for state alcohol licenses
Oversee and conduct drainage studies and specifications
Act as an agency for the Technical Advisory Commission
Serves as an ex officio member of the County Drainage Board.
In addition to the statutory obligations described above, the Gibson County Surveyor’s Office is involved in the following areas of county service:
Development of Gibson County's GIS
Assisting other County Offices (ie Commissioners, Highway Department, Assessor, Auditor, etc.)
David Robb, Robert M. Evans, and Purnel Fisher were County Surveyor prior to James Smith, but it is unknown as to the exact years in which they served.
